Share a funny story from your life?GETTING ON A CAMEL
It was 6:00 P.M. on a hot, dry day in April, 1995. I was in Morocco about to get on a camel for a 1 day caravan into the Sahara desert. The camel was one of the ugliest animals I have ever seen. His skin was very hairy and it looked very thick. His face was very long and the eyes seemed to stick out from the side of his face. His mouth was huge so that he could spit; which he did often. My first thoughts were why am I getting on this animal?
My friend Caroline and I had come to Morocco to visit my friend Diane and her husband Robert. When Diane picked us up from the airport, she informed us that she and her husband had planed for us two sight-seeing trips that we could choose from. The first option was to take the ocean view of Morocco, while the second option was driving over the Atlas Mountains into the Sahara desert for a camel caravan. Knowing my friend Caroline well, I had no doubt that she would choose the ocean view, so I let her choose which trip she would like us to go on. To my great surprise she choose the camel caravan trip! At this point it was too late for me to take back my generous offer, so here I am staring at this camel thinking that I could have been laying on a beach somewhere getting a suntan.
The camel that I was assigned to was a one hump camel. Behind the hump there was a blanket and on top of the blanket was the saddle that I was about to make an effort to get on. The guide that was going to take us into the desert, made the camels sit down on their knees, by pushing their front legs in, then their back legs in. When I saw him sitting down “I thought how am I going to get on this camel?” I am 4’ 10½” (do not forget the half) tall. Looking at him he seemed about 4’ tall and about 3’ wide. It was going to be hard to get my leg up and across the camel on the saddle. The first time I tried I got my leg up but not quite all the way across. I put my leg back down and gave myself a few minutes and I tried again. This time I told myself if you don’t get on this camel you are going to be laughing stock of the whole caravan. So I hoisted my leg up as high as I could and got it all the way to the other side, and sat on the saddle; I was feeling great that I accomplished getting on the camel. But my feeling of greatness did not last very long. When the guide saw me he said I was too far back on the saddle so I had to get off and try again. By this time I was thinking that I should have just stayed at the hotel, but I gave myself one more try and this time I was on this unsightly creature. I told myself, you are finally on this camel, hold on tight to the handle bar, and don’t fall down when the camel stands up. “Hallelujah” the camel stood and I was still on it!

We rode into the desert for about 3 hours before we reached the camp site. Sitting on a camel for 3 hours is not very comfortable, and I could not wait to get off. When I got off the camel, I could hardly walk, and I could not even begin to describe what I smelled like. Lets just say you would not want to be next to me. The guides took off all the saddles and the blankets from the camels. They took the saddles and arranged them into a circle and put the blankets inside the circle. This was where we would sleep that night; the saddles as our pillows and the blankets as our bed. One of the most fascinating things that the guides did to the camels was tying their legs together so that they could not run away during the night. Staying in the desert overnight was exciting but a story to be told another time.
All night long I could not sleep because all I could think about was that I had to get on the camel to go back. The next morning the moment of truth came. My muscles had become very stiff, and getting my leg up and over to get on the camel was going to hurt very much. I looked at my camel and decided this was not the camel I had the day before, it looked taller and wider then I remembered. But I had no choice but to get on this camel because this was the only camel left, everyone was on their camel except me. So I took a deep breath, got my leg up, and just as my leg was about to go over the saddle the camel decides to stand up without being instructed to do so. My feet got caught on the saddle where the handle bars were, and the rest of my body was hanging on the side of the camel upside down. My thoughts were: how in the world did you get into this mess and how are you going to get out of it, and my friend Caroline will owe me for the rest of her life for this. I kept thinking if I fall down at least it’s on sand, so it wont hurt to much, but I hoped someone would catch me. Thankfully a friend of Diane’s and Robert had come along with us, so he quickly came and caught me as I was falling down. I was shaken, scared and terrified of getting back on the camel, but it was the only transportation back to the city where we started. “I could walk,” I said, but those who were with me insisted that I ride the camel. They gave me few moments to compose myself before I tried getting back on it.
The man who caught me offered to pick me up and just put me on the camel. Great idea I thought, but then again, not such a great idea. Catching me was one thing but to pick me up was another. I contemplated if I should let him pick me up because looking at him he was only 5’4” and weight maybe about 130 pounds, and I am not as skinny as I could be. I didn’t want to be embarrassed more then I already was. How embarrassed I would be if he could not pick me up or even worse he would drop me when he picked me up, but all of a sudden without any warning he picked me up and set me down on the camel. At this point I thanked God that I was alive, and that he was able to pick me up with out dropping me. In about an hour we had gotten back to where we had started from. If I knew that getting back was only an hour I knew I could have walked back.
Here are a few things to consider when you are going on a camel caravan trip. First, don’t assume you know your best friend well. Second, if you are 4’10½” I would recommend not trying to get on a camel, but if you are the adventurous type, I say try it. You might end up with a story that you can laugh about someday.
